This book took me longer than I’d like to finish because I just wasn’t absorbed in it. It WAS good, really good, but I didn’t find myself thinking about it throughout the day (except when I said “that chodadu thing” or something similar). The world building was good, I loved the characters, the magic was cool. The beginning really had me but by the time they were out to sea my interest slowed. I was definitely not going to DNF this one though. There was so much going on, honestly it really was good and I enjoyed it and I will be reading the next in the series. I think I was just having an off few weeks.

To me, this is the spiritual twin of Buehlman's "Between Two Fires". A story of a reluctant thief, an honor bound knight, a witchling and a cat all wrapped up in a very well thought out world of goblins, magic, treachery and glory. I've always had a soft spot for fantasy like this and I really enjoyed getting back into it after all these years. Yes I read "The Lord of The Rings" every year, but this kind of fantasy is different. This is medieval and dirty and sneaky and dark. This is the kind of fantasy that feels further away from the world we live in, further away from the boring realm of reality.  A little confusing at times and a bit slow to start, but overall, a great addition to any fantasy lovers collection. A solid 3 stars for me and a recommendation to anyone who wants to further explore Christopher Buehlman's writing.
