I wish I had a deeper memory and understanding of Hamlet. I enjoyed the interspersed bits of writing the dialogue between characters like a script. The story also did a good job of naturally showing some of the difficulties and complexities  of life in occupied  Palestine. I don’t know if I finished the book with a full understanding of Sonia or her motives, but still found the book compelling.

using this west bank production of hamlet was a really masterful way to explore so many dynamics between the characters, and also mirror and contrast the theatrics that israel puts on to maintain their control over palestine. i appreciated the layered discussion of how borders imposed by colonizers are used to create not only physical divisions, but also fractures within a people, a family, and within the main character sonia herself.

Kind of a topical book given the current Israel/Palestine war. It’s about a British woman who’s family is Palestinian but she only visited during summers. She hadn’t returned for many years though her elder sister has lived there for ages. She decides to take an extended trip to get out of a bad situation at work and also to get to know her sister better. Whilst there she is roped in to perform in a production of Hamlet in Arabic. It’s about putting on this play and the two sisters but it’s also about the terrible situation of Palestinians in Israel. The oppression is not overt it’s more show don’t tell. In that it just shows how hard it is to put on this play. There are checkpoint to everywhere. Their set gets confiscated, the actors are taken in for interrogation, soldiers try and disrupt their shows. It’s just pretty bad state there for them.
