I’m a sucker for the found family troupe and anything that pays homage to Shakespeare. This was so haunting and bleak. The characters are flawed and passionate and just really well written.
Wish I could shove this in every Zionist’s face.

I listened to this on audio. It was short listed for the Women Prize for Fiction in 2024 and was beautifully written. However, I found it rather slow paced. In terms of learnings, “Mornings in Jenin” by Susan Abulhawa gives a far greater insight into the impact of the ongoing events in Palestine. The characters in Enter Ghost felt a lot more privileged. Their daily lives are somewhat interrupted by border controls and politically driven interventions, but more from an inconvenience perspective, than from a fundamental ‘life or death’ standpoint.
The story follows a collective rehearsing to perform Hamlet in the West Bank in Arabic. Perhaps the purpose is to demonstrate how the arts push through civil war and destruction. The protagonist Sonia Nasir lives in London, but comes to visit her sister, who lives in Haifa and works as a lecturer in a Tel Aviv university. It subtly explores the emotions and tensions between those who leave and those who stay, though it felt more like character study than an examination of origins and association.
