Content Warning: This book depicts several sexual assault scenes in detail.

This was a fun read. It was a little difficult to get into in the beginning but the middle to end was super suspenseful and interesting. The ending felt like it fumbled the ball just a bit but overall I enjoyed the book. It takes a while to get into it but the payoff is worth it. If you like realistic fantasy and the paranormal, this is the read.

In terms of the content warning, a lot of the SA scenes feel very rushed and used only for shock value. In the moment, they are relevant but they seem to just disappear and never have any other message behind them when all is said and done. They are all very shocking and it makes it very difficult to want to continue the read.

Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Dropping out of high school early, she goes down a shady path filled with dealers, bad men & dead-end jobs. In a seemingly crazy twist of events, she ends up the sole survivor of a gruesome, unsolved multi-homicide. While recovering in the hospital, she is offered the chance to completely 180 her life if she lends her help with something… magical?

I don’t know why it has taken me so long to read this book truly. It has been on my tbr for FAR too long 👀 Once I got into the story, I absolutely ate up Leigh Bardugo’s writing! Her characters + their backstories and how we find out those backstories through the progression of the book had me gasping for breath it felt like every ten minutes. So many twists and turns in this one. Overall, I really liked reading Ninth House and plan to pick up Hell Bent (the sequel) soon to hopefully get some more Darlington. we need more Darlington.

What I loved:

♡ ba anti-heroine
♡ the audiobook was brilliant
♡ gothic uni setting
♡ well-painted characters
♡ plot twists for days
♡ magical houses + secret societies
♡ unrelenting tension
♡ darlington. 🫶🏻
♡ “there were always excuses for why girls died”

I bought the sequel to this book at an airport not knowing it was a sequel until I realized certain terms were not being explained. So I did some digging and borrowed this one from a friend. So glad I did that! This isn’t my normal type of story but it had everything I love. Good adventure, natural mysteries, other worldly experiences, and the best of all? Not a single romance. It had a girl as the main character being a freaking bad ass and not one man came to knock her down or lose her shine with a relationship. It was all about enjoying that mystery murder and the drama of magic. Fun read! Onto the next one!

I’ve never read a book like this before, and it’s so refreshingly different than Bardugo’s YA novels (which I also loved!). I loved the sinister magic/dark academia vibes and how the multiple storylines unfold throughout the book. Lots of great plot twists I didn’t see coming and made me gasp out loud. I wish I understood more about the history of the houses/general world-building, but I think the book is written intentionally vague with a trickle of information as you are thrust into this world within our world, which adds to the mysterious, sinister feel. It kept me hooked and I can’t wait to read the next book. Apparently, lots of this book (not the magic lol) is true too, and now I want to go to New Haven.
