a smart study written with rollicking energy, almost as if an oral tour de force, that lays out this persistent problem, if somehow you've missed it or don't care, of black women getting treated like shit. this is the ongoing saga of making a way out of no way and all its pain and glory. this book overlaps with the last i just read, but begins earlier with the clubwomen up through welfare activists up through those who emerged to support anita hill. if you're not inspired by this death-defying tradition, not at all to reduce this to some extracted resource, then something is seriously wrong with you. this is written super accessibly, and travels very light and quick, eschewing overloading with too many details to keep the read swept up in its narrative flux.
