So in the first arc the main character has a relationship with one of her teachers, a core plot point in the book is the suicide of a guy, the main character is shoved out of a party of white girls due to her being Asian, there's like societal fatphobia shown but not really discussed in the book, there's an ongoing theory that the guy who commited suicide did it because he was gay and a homophobic slur is used

I liked this book well enough but I think it would have resonated with me more 8-10 years ago when I was myself a student at a catholic girls' school grappling with some of the same questions. 

Now as a teacher myself, the whole this with Ms. Archer especially not what I wanted to read.

The art is really gorgeous! I highly recommend it for anyone who likes graphic novels for their artwork. The story is a calm little narrative about a LGBTQIA+ youth who struggles with loneliness and, I think, disordered eating. Though this is never put into words, the drawings speak for themselves. The text and drawing are sometimes contradictory but in a way that makes sense because of the diary format. Skim is obviously an unreliable narrator of her own life. She is very judgemental but that's just part of being a 90's-teenager immersed in the whole "I'm not like the other girls"-culture.

I really, really enjoyed this. It feels like My So-Called Life (which I love) meets The Craft (which I haven't seen, but I feel like I get the vibe.) I love the subtlety of both the art and the text. It would be sort of hard to explain what the plot is, but I really understand the character's inner journey, which is my favorite kind of book. Finding your ways between the poles of ignorance and nihilism in your teens is no small subject matter, but Mariko and Jillian Tamaki really nail it.

Mariko and Jillian Tamaki have created some of the most heartbreakingly realistic graphic novels about being a teenager, where not a lot happens but everything that does happen feels like the most important thing ever. Though I was never a BIPOC teen Wiccan goth, myself, I felt Kim's struggles so keenly. A wonderful book about the weirdness that being a teenager entails.
