I think I will give up on literature that rides the coat tails of classics. Interesting. Not great.

Another in the series by Laurie R. King about Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, The Moor is set in the location of one of Holmes' best known mysteries, The Hound of the Baskervilles. The moor itself is a character, dark and dangerous with its chilling sounds and odd inhabitants. The hound may have been seen again and two men have died. Russell and Holmes investigate and learn to love the strange and forbidding place.

Not as interesting as the others I’ve read- a lot of repetitive, fairly boring events. Just okay overall. At least I’ve read that the next one in the series is better!

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this at first, but now I'm eager to find others in the series and read them. How's that for an endorsement? :) I enjoyed Mary's character, felt rather like I'd been visiting Dartmoor for a few days (the endless mentions of hot beverages and baths did wonders for sympathetic world-building, for me) and enjoyed getting to know this iteration of Holmes through the eyes of a woman who loves him and who, in his way, he loves as well. This was slow-paced, but in a good way. Oh, and I loved learning or being reminded of some awesome vocabulary words! :)

Sherlock Holmes goes back to the site of one of his most famous cases, The Hound of the Baskervilles, to investigate more mystery on the moors. One of the charming things about this series for me, and of this book in particular, is that King takes time to describe her characters surroundings in great detail. A bit slow in the beginning, this book picks up speed as it goes along.

I was going to give this book 2 stars and then chapter 25 came. And my least favourite thing in detective/crime thrillers - the VILLAIN DOESN'T JUST SHOOT THE HERO BUT EXPLAINS THEIR WHOLE PLAN. It was the straw that broke this poor camel's back.
In addition to this the book's first two thirds are just talking and sort of vague investigating of basically nothing.
So, no, I don't think I'll be continuing with this series. 4 is quite enough to see that this is not my cup of Sherlock.

Although I love the series as a whole, I'm not a fan of books two and three. Had The Moor kept along the lines of those books I probably would have stopped reading the series. This one though is focused again on Holmes and less so on Mary's research and/or their adventures in Palestine. The Moor feels a lot like The Hound of the Baskervilles and is therefore full of win.

I love this series and plan on reading all of these novels! However this was the most dry of the four I’ve read! I think it was just more of a Sherlock adventure and Mary tagged along. I still liked it!
