Think Hellboy meets House, which is actually a pretty rad combination.

AMAZEBALLS.

I think that sums it up in one word. But if I must elaborate, I shall. This is one of the most inventive and fresh takes on the horror genre I've ever seen. Explaining all of the monsters of horror and dark fantasy as parasites and diseases that have evolved from the Ancient Ones (i.e. Cthulhu of the Lovecraft mythos) is BRILLIANT. Love the characters, love the details, love the ring of authenticity and the macabre art. Basically, I love everything this series chooses to be. CANNOT WAIT FOR VOLUME 2.

Doctor Strange meets Lovecraftian/horror creatures meets The Doctor crossed with Sherlock/House, but with better bedside manner. Lots of offbeat but apropos humor (i.e. shaking a faerie baby to remove its glamour).

Fun book about a world inhabited by horrors and the man, Dr. Victor Morrow, who is responsible for taking care of said monster using magic mostly. He's not the only man: in fact, there is a council who rules over him and deals in magic and monsters.

But he does seem to be the man destined to save the world from monsters.

Meanwhile, it's monster chases mixed in with a little bit of bureaucracy.

It's a enjoyable book, so much so that mid way through I checked for more volumes and was glad to see another and sad to see no more than one more volume.

It's been a fairly Lovecrafty month for me as this book I've wanted to read came in from the library and I immediately fell for it.

The graphic novel itself is a series of short tales that eventually merge together into a broader plot, but we have a doctor of paranormal stuff who fights Lovecraftian demons and has to deal with the bureaucratic nightmare that goes along with it. It's sort of like Dresden in a more cosmic setting, which speaks to me in a few ways.

Not saying it's perfect, but it's tons of fun and definitely something I enjoyed. Might be worth your time if it sounds at all like something down your alley.

I wondered how to rate this, but i decided on the better score because of the wicked art.

The story has a lot of potential, but it feels rushed. I don't see a lot of character development or back stories that would make me feel something for the characters. The only one i enjoyed from the beginning is Penny, i feel that she is the moving power in the series

The atmosphere lingers in between "The league of extraordinary gentlemen" and the TV show "Supernatural". Oh, and don't forget the medical/supernatural vocabulary.

I enjoyed the fact that they touched the surface of the creation and extinction themes and let's not forget that wicked umbrella the doctor has.

All in all, it's not a bad read if you have some spare time to kill.

Graphic novels aren't usually my thing, but this was a fun one. The art was wonderfully gory, and I like that this takes a medical approach to the supernatural as it explains and explores the science behind what makes these creatures tick. As the author notes at the end, classic monsters like zombies and werewolves really are disease metaphors, so his interpretation makes a lot of sense. I look forward to seeing how he handles other creatures in future volumes. (Hopefully there's more of his patient/assistant Penny, too.)
