I don't know how I feel about this book. It was definitely fucked up and interesting but I expected a bit more from a carmilla retelling. I almost feel like the main character was miss delefontaine instead of Laura and carmila. I enjoyed the collage setting but as a ra kept getting dragged out of it by the odd behaviour and lack of school regulations. I enjoyed the prose and the interactions between characters that are stewed in obsession and hatred, but a lot of the decision and twists were stupid and came out of nowhere. I think that I enjoyed it more due to the talent of Stephanie Cannon who did a amazing performance ad a narrator, I think I would have gotten frustrated of I was reading it. All the characters need a healthy conversations about boundaries and toxic relationships as well as how to be wary of older people that give bad vibes. Also it read weirdly straight, and there was more heterosexual interactions then i expected from this and it draggggggged in the 2nd half. Ngl I did love carmilla in this, absolutely feral and deranged behaviour from this girl and honestly go off queen it ain't your fault you got groomed and miss d is irresponsible as hell. I did love the ending though.

Gibson writes lovely prose and the story had great atmosphere. For me, the rivals to lovers aspects in the beginning worked a bit better than the fantasy aspects in the later part of the story, but I would recommend this to fans of dark academia.

2.75 this is objectively fine, just nothing special… however i will say there is absolutely no reason that this needed to be a “carmilla retelling” bc it’s not. it’s a story with vampires and lesbians and characters named Carmilla and Laura and that is really the extent of connection to the OG story. my favorite thing about the original Carmilla is the character of Carmilla herself, and the Carmilla in this story is completely different, though I do think she would have given off much more similar vibes to the OG if this was only from Laura’s perspective. other than that, this story is fine but just feels very surface level. every character other than maybe Carmilla and Laura is really flat and behaves exactly how you would expect them to. i also feel that the dynamic between Laura and Carmilla changed so suddenly, and the character growth of DeLafontaine was also really quick and kinda off to me .

Not a fan of dark academia. Not excited to listen to it. I feel like there’s no sort of mystery to the story- I feel like I already know they’re lesbian vampires and I don’t care what happens beyond that

I can’t lie, this was such a letdown.

I should preface this by saying that I adore Gibson’s writing. Dowry of Blood is probably one of my favourite books because of the writing alone.
However, no matter how good the writing is, the plot and story needs to be enticing to keep one interested. There is quite frankly no charm to this novel. The story is anticlimactic and reads like a YA with sex. There aren’t any scenes that cause for the dark or mysterious atmosphere I wanted. The characters were very bland and forgettable, the highlight for this was getting to see Magdalena again.

I also feel as if there is barely enough gothic atmosphere to make it a gothic and dark academia feeling read. Overall a very mid read. There wasn’t enough conflict to keep the story entertaining and if it wasn’t so short it might have been a DNF.
