Beautifully written prose, but the focus overall was on the characters, not the plot.

Okay so.... I didn't know upfront it was about vampires. Probably allll my mistake but... I didn't know.
And I love a good vampire story, I do. But I just didn't expect it to take the turn it did and it threw me off a bit.

So yeah, nice dark academic vampire tale. Just not the dark academic one I was expecting

The ending was so abrupt that it kind of ruined the book for me. The big bad being killed that easily felt lazy and rushed. Also, it felt like the main characters didn’t really have much chemistry. It seemed more like Carmilla  discovered that Laura wanted her and therefore liked the attention rather than actually liking Laura

I really liked this! I haven’t read Carmilla yet, but I definitely connected to the characters and understood their relationship dynamic. Gibson’s writing is gorgeous, so vivid and lyrical and the dark academia vibes were strong. I will always love a vampire story, and this sapphic obsession take was so sexy.

"I learned how to survive the cutthroat world of girlhood, where all strangeness was unrooted as ruthlessly as weeds from a garden."

An Education in Malice is a Carmilla retelling with an academia setting, a toxic relationship between professor and student and a sapphic relationship full of yearning and lust.

I was incredibly excited for this book, however, it didn't really hit for me. I was aching for more poetry, an intense back and forth between Carmilla and Laura with their words. I wanted more from them as rivals, fighting the urge to be with one another as they fall into a toxic cycle. I felt this book was lacking in atmosphere, lacking in character work and unfortunately, it has an unsatisfying conclusion. I believe my expectations were too high and that is where my complaints stem from. I didn't dislike this book, I was intrigued enough to continue and I thoroughly enjoy S.T. Gibson's writing. I would still recommend this book if you want a Carmilla retelling and a fall/winter read to enjoy by the fire with a cup of coffee.
