The first 400 pages or so had me gripped and it was shaping up to be an easy 4 star thriller ideal for a holiday then out of nowhere shenanigans were introduced that really brought the tone of the book down for me. Then the conclusion was rushed into about 20 pages which honestly could have been expanded on instead of what occurred in the proceeding 100 or so pages.
I consistently rate books quite high because if I’m not enjoying them I just don’t finish them.
But this book. Wow. I have never read another book that take such a sharp left turn 3/4s in.
For the first 3/4 solid spy book. Little bit of weirdness with some premonitions but solid.
Then suddenly it’s a time travelling submarine and alien invasion via spores - that just coincidentally happen at the same time. There is a failure of explain, or attempt to explain, a large host of coincidences. Some characters believe what I think most people would think is a totally bizarre tale with uncharacteristic rapidness.
Whilst the first part is well fleshed out, this last part lacks depth in places where it would have been well served.
Overall, I’m just left thinking this was a very weird experience!

Enjoyable spy story that took a bizarre turn to science fiction.
Not a bad book, but.. weird for the spy genre I suppose.

Only reason this book gets one star is because at one point it got so ridiculous that the bad mood I was in while reading totally disepeard because I laughed so hard because of the plot. I don't understand why nobody told to remove that part, it had no meaning at all. But glad they didn't because it was a long time since I had such a laugh with a book. (Officaly I didn't finish the book, just skipped to the end.)

The first 3/4 of this book is along the same vain as his previous Best seller and I was thoroughly enjoying it. It then took a rather strange and fantastical turn for the last 1/4 of the book and the two parts really didn't work together. They should of been two separate books and it felt like he had run out of steam with the first story and came up with another idea half way through. On saying that, I really liked the fast paced nature of his writing and the initial story was a gripping read.

It's an Ok-ish thriller for most of the 500 pages I managed, but it was already unsatisfactory in ways I Am Pilgrim wasn't. Then it just gets silly, breaking a contract with the reader. Either the author's editor was asleep on the job, or just wanted to the book off their desk after years of waiting for it ... because it's just silly, and not in a good way.
