I read it while in sokcho and it just providing such a stark contrast to the vibrant greens of summer and the huge crowds I experienced. It was so interesting to juxtapose the two different images of sokcho!
i always find korean authors to have such an enticing writing style :) i wonder if it has to do with them often being bilingual so having a greater vocabulary or exposure to language?
winter in shokcho does not have much plot, but i love a book with no plot, i think it leaves a lot of room for visual imagery and character development. my main thematic interpretation of this book has to do with her lack of sense of self. she feels unlike either her french or korean heritage, uncomfortable in her body, and with herself as a whole. i think she subconsciously sees a lot of herself in her father and tries to hide that part of her.
there are plenty of interpretations to be made from this book so i think it will be one that i read multiple times and find new things each read

Good book, didn't enjoy reading it, but it feels like that's the purpose.
For whatever reason, it seems that "liminal spaces" are a trendy topic at the moment, at least as far as liminality itself can be a trend.
Winter in Sokcho is the queen of all liminal stories. Situated at the Korean border, this story follows an unnamed inn receptionist during the off season as she develops an interest in a solemn, artistic guest. There is a lot of quiet waiting, and ultimately very little is resolved.
The prose is incredibly pleasant in its simplicity, I can't wait to read more from Elisa Shua Dusapin.
