Short and engaging. Does a good job of capturing the location and the main character’s sadness.
In strange scenery people find each other and themselves, artistically and consumptively - through food etc.
So beautifully written. In true short story fashion, I just wish there was more
I’d seen this book in various corners of the internet and I decided to try it. The premise seemed interesting enough, and it was short so I gave it a chance. However, this book was just…not for me I think. I just felt like it kind of went no where. In my mind, I know it did lead to something but it was so trivial I didn’t really care much about it. This book does have a very strong sense of atmosphere, which I took a liking to, but other than that I just don’t think this book was all that interesting. There are ways to do a book with minimal plot well, and I just felt that this didn’t achieve that.

Beau, simple, efficace. Entre roman et poème, une jolie parenthèse.
Maybe this book’s meaning flew over my head. Maybe I struggle with translated books (although I try so hard to love them, I’m always left wishing I could understand and speak the original language they were written in). Maybe I’m a bigger fan of more saturated, rich setting and character descriptions. This book just felt too sterile.
It could potentially be that the sterility and coldness of the descriptions were to reflect the frozen-in-time town of Sokcho and North-South Korean relations. I recognize that for what it is and do appreciate the character that winter came to be in this story. However, the actual characters were difficult to attach myself to and root for. Not sure how to feel about this book.
