It was an atmospherical book that taught me quite a bit on South Korea, even though there were a lot of words that I didn't understand. However, I feel like something was missing, something big to happen, just something. It was pretty monotone but that went well with the vibe of Sokcho. However, I feel like a feel-good ending, a big event or a plot twist would have upgraded this book by a lot.
I still think it's a good book to just chill and travel.

i loved this so much. such a strong narrative voice and i love love loved our protagonist (not sure if this is unpopular?)

i have been thinking about the ending because im not entirely sure i resonate with the resolution, but at the same time im not exactly sure what i would be after instead?

but overall loved this a lot

A short immersive read.

Dusapin writes beautifully, carefully creating a solid world for the reader to fall into. The characters are intriguing & intense, and incredibly addictive.

The short format of the chapters read more like witnessing a series of tableaux in quick succession. Really enjoyable Sunday read.

This book and me didn’t work out - and while I should have left it the moment I realized it made me unhappy, I stayed until the bitter end. Somehow I kept hoping for a reveal/surprise/turn of events that would woo me, but it never happened.

Sigh.

An unnamed heroine works at a guest house in Sokcho, Korea and pines after a French guest. Much attention goes into the details and daily chores, but a lot went over my head.
