Heartrending and hilarious don't often mix in the same book, but Butcher's getting it done. The sex scene was pretty well done and the horror was done better. The dramatis personae are being fleshed out and I'm adoring all the white hats, as I should. Of course I want to know what happens next!

The first entry in Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files to fully find its footing and pacing.  While prior books set the stage for this entry, (and I would recommend reading them first), it stands on its own.

In the midst of a cold war between the secretive wizards of the White Council and the rapacious vampires of the Red Court, Harry Dresden is caught in the middle of a more dangerous web than ever before.  With representatives of the Vatican, a Vampiric warlord, and an international burglary syndicate in town, the Second City is getting hotter by the minute.

Another one that keeps its 5-star ranking! And, again, the world of Dresden expands a bit more, while maintaining what has been built. The Denarians are a fantastic group of players, and are generally an awesome foil to the Knights of the Cross- and it was great to see two more of them, and spend more time with the Carpenters and meet the rest of the family. Especially Molly! :-) Also getting The Archive & Kincaid, and Ward, introduced in this book. Fantastic. Ivy is creepy, yo!

Again, I found this booked lacked little if anything. While we didn't see any of the Sidh or the Alphas, there was reference to each. Murphy played a smaller role, but sometimes I'm good with that- as much as I like her, I think putting her in the middle of SUCH a battle would have gone badly. Thomas was even back, which is always wonderful. And we definitely made progress on the war with the Red Court. And all with the standard Dresden snark that I love. =D

Best book of the series by far. The use of the religious iconography is what pulled me to this series in the first place. I love the concept of the fallen thirty and the knights of the cross. I also felt the supporting cast was stronger and more developed in this one. Butcher even managed to make the mob boss sympathetic. I was kind of floundering on this series a few books ago, but this renewed my interest.

Honestly, I thought Death Masks was once again dragged down by the boring politics between factions of supernatural creatures. Maybe I'm in the minority with this but I think I preferred the monster-of-the-week pacing of the first few books in the series. The action sequences of Death Masks were great as usual, but everything in between felt a bit over-complicated and dull.

I also was just generally annoyed to see Dresden's misogyny return full-force, and I think it especially had a negative impact on
his reunion with Susan. I wish he had spent more time actually treating her like an equal and less time complaining about how she makes him insecure in his masculinity, especially since her becoming a half-vampire has made her a lot cooler and more interesting in my book. Men really just hate seeing women come into their own, I guess.

Quick, fun, forgettable read.  I honestly don’t understand how this book/series is regarded as highly as it is because the writing is pretty meh and the plots aren’t anything all that special.  Any character that could be interesting is usually portrayed as being painfully two-dimensional.  It all adds up to something a bit more paint-by-numbers than cleverly constructed.  I really want to love these books, but none of these have been anything better or worse than a pleasant diversion.
