Fascinating & entertaining biography from one of the inner royal circle.

Interesting read on the royals and a rather bizarre family. From her husbands antics to get attention and odd whims, to friends that take you on a girls trip to find a hit man for their son-in-law, to the very real impacts of HIV and addiction on a family. A good listen on the audiobook as her posh accent adds a little punch to the wacky and unexpected stories.

Lady in Waiting is one of those books that's just sort of mind-boggling because, on it's surface, it feels so far removed from anything I am familiar with. But while Anne Glenconner's life is unrelatable in so many ways, she's still just a person, telling her strange story which includes love and loss just like the rest of us.

Unexpectedly charming although a bit whimsical, this is a book filled with the most bizarre and "high-strung" collection of people that I've ever seen. At times it seems all a bit too much... Like these characters are almost too excentric to be real, or even function in the world as we know it. But somehow, due to the sincerity of the tale being told, it all works out.

Despite the fact that they live in a world filled with first-class plane tickets, travels around the world, friends with yachts, private planes and manors that can host multitudinary weekends of entertainment, they suffer through life like everyone else (albeit with certain benefits that in my opinion, no one far removed from those circles of nobility and wealth could dream of). It is otherworldly and movie-like, and at the same time fraught with peril and heartache that helps the reader connect on a more humane level.

A truly marvelous life lived to the fullest through a very tumultuous period of time, accompanied by certain notorious and historical figures, seen in a much more intimate light than what we usually get, make this book worth your time. Even if it's only to marvel at how much this woman went through in her life and at how cookie some of the people surrounding her actually are/were!

Listened to the audiobook, read by the author. The chapter about Christopher’s accident and recovery, and the chapters about the various people she’d lost overall the years, were really touching. You could hear her voice crack when she spoke of them. When you live to be her age, you will inevitably lose friends and family, but it is terribly sad nonetheless.
What an extraordinary life she had! I was thoroughly captivated by her.
