challenging dark tense medium-paced

This book is a difficult book to read. There is a trigger warning in the beginning and you should believe it. That said for those who can read triggering books, it is unlike many books I have read. It also feels prescient and thus incredibly affecting for reading right now. Although as I suppose the "House" would say, is it surprising or prescient at all, or "more of the same"?

Ufff... this is a hard review to write. I wanted to love this book. It has everything I was asking for: a queer horror story that tackles contemporary issues. Yet, despite its promising premise, the execution was... pretty bad.

Books are political, and reading is a political act.

But perhaps this wasn't the right time for me to dive into "Tell Me I'm Worthless," or maybe it was the way the messages were conveyed to readers. The book's message is ambiguous, REALLY ambiguous. I can tell what the author wanted to portray, but they didn't do a good job of it (from my perspective).

You can finish this book thinking:
"Oh, how great it is to see feminist characters and trans characters correctly represented outside of romance books" (which is an amazing takeaway from the novel).

Or you can leave this book thinking:
“Yeah, fuck these woke people and their gender ideology, they're all rapists" (I hated writing that sentence).

When a book that tries to support a cause can be interpreted in a way that damages it... well, it's not great, is it? This book had a lot of wasted potential and missed opportunities.

In terms of the story itself, the pacing was awful too.

There were too many pointless pages, repetitive scenes, messy explanations and too many pop culture references that will be lost to readers in five years!! The plot doesn't move forward until 60% of the way through!

I don't know. I wanted to love it, and I just couldn't. I almost DNF'd it many times, but I won't give up. I'll keep searching for good queer horror books. I'm sure there are more out there.

Es bastante terrible que la gente queer sea la única que está escribiendo libros interesantes y (sobre todo) no anticuadísimos a estas alturas, ¿no creen?
