Sarah Sundin’s novels always remind me why we call the men & women of World War II,
“The Greatest Generation.”

Her most recent book, In Perfect Time, tells the story of flight nurse Kay Jobson and C-47 pilot Roger Cooper, who work together in Italy and southern France to evacuate the wounded and deliver paratroopers and supplies. They are hard-working, courageous, and quick-thinking. In their down-time, Roger entertains the local kids by playing the drums on any available surface, dreams of auditioning for a Glen Miller type big band, and stays far away from girls. And beautiful, high-spirited Kay, who can’t seem to break through Roger’s quiet reserve, appreciates him from afar.

Of course, we readers can see that Roger and Kay would be perfect for each other, but these characters have personal issues to work through before they can become a real team. Both Kay and Roger are damaged by families who did not cherish them—and even deemed them worthless. After years of being told they would never measure up, they are haunted by their parents’ hateful words.

Kay and Roger help each other wage powerful inner battles to overcome the negative messages of their youth and see themselves as God sees them. Their personal struggles and growth—set against the backdrop of the fierce fighting around them—make this a riveting, romantic story.

What I liked best . . .

How Sarah brings the World War II settings to life
The great dynamic between Roger & Kay
Roger’s marked up old Bible
Catching up with Georgie and Mellie (from previous books in this series)
A beautiful scene where an old hymn works truth & healing in Kay’s heart
The action—an especially harrowing capture
The USO war bonds tour
The Nightingale Sisters
The sweetly satisfying ending
How much my students love these books, as well!

My favorite quotes . . .

Sarah Sundin In Perfect Time“I think the heartbeat itself is a drum message from God. With every beat, He sends His message. His life, His love. His life, His love.” ~Lt. Roger Cooper, In Perfect Time by Sarah Sundin~

“Something warm and light stirred in her soul. Her earthly father scorned her, but her heavenly Father—oh, what He had done for her. He loved her, forgave her sins, and gave her gifts too numerous to count.” ~Lt. Kay Cooper, In Perfect Time by Sarah Sundin~

Having read the first book in the series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the books. I just need to read the second one yet. This book I really enjoyed as I love the WWII-era. It has a lot of meaning to my family background.

I first read about Kay Jobson in the first book, With Every Letter. I didn’t really like her in there just because the way she acted. Now though in this book, it gives us her back story and the reason why she acts the way she does.

This book was really well written and researched. I hope to get more books by Sarah Sundin as she is now one of my favorite authors.

4.5 stars

I really enjoyed this ending to the trilogy. I was curious about Kay's story and how she became this flirtatious, chameleon that blended into both nurse friend groups. And she has a very interesting background that explains a lot. Her's is a very redemptive storyline of accepting love and being washed clean and being enough. Roger had some surprisingly similar issues and also had to realize his worth and capabilities. They had quite a few bumps in the road, but built a lovely friendship and love together.

I'm giving this book 4.5 stars because to me there was one too many miscommunications at the end. I just wanted them to sort it out a little sooner than they did. Really it was the very last issue that was a little annoying and seemingly unnecessary.

The history and stories told in this book are so interesting. You can't be sure something like this could truly happen, and then you Google it and see that it is based on a true story. I love that!

It is always sad to end a series and have to say goodbye to these characters. They all get their happily ever after, but I could always use more chapters! Cue the book hangover!

*I must admit, after some time thinking about this book I feel there was one very secondary storyline that I feel wasn't concluded enough for me. I wanted someone to get what was coming to him, or fix his wayward actions. Which is another reason that I'm giving this 4.5 stars.*

MY FAVORITE OF THE SERIES! Run!!! Don’t walk!!! Such a GOOD BOOK!!!

In a more serious review, this book was amazing. I was shocked that it touched so deeply on spiritual and childhood abuse. Praise God for how Sarah graciously writes on that topic. The romance was great, but the growth of the characters and the spiritual aspects were so good and rich. Loved every moment!

This is a great finale to the Wings of the Nightengales series. I loved learning about Kay and finally understanding what had happened to her in her past. Roger was a fun character to get to know and I loved watching them find their way. The story had some very exciting points and kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I do wish we'd had a little more story to what happened to Vera and Alice but other than that this story was pretty much perfect.

A really good ending to a really good trilogy of books. I enjoy historical Christian fiction very much, especially those with happy endings and overlapping characters, so this series really was quite enjoyable for me :)
