Creates a great atmosphere while simultaneously making you reflect on the themes it approaches!

I am a little conflicted though, cause while I really enjoyed this, the writing wasn't really for me (it's my own fault) but I just kept getting lost in the middle of the action and this happened throughout the book! It felt like running and I was prepared for a walk, you know?
Still, really worth it and I'm definitely gonna go into the second one.

Great YA fantasy with an interesting power system that incorporates relevant social/cultural/historical elements, all tied together with the lore of Arthur and the round table. This book does not shy away from the real impact of racism and systematic oppression while also highlighting the strength of community and generational connection.
I love that root craft is powered by honoring those who have passed and is about even exchange and mutual respect. In opposition to what the book called “colonizer magic”. 🤭 I liked that tidbit.

The romance/love triangle sprinkled in was great and the progression felt natural and not forced.

I definitely recommend it to all fantasy readers and anyone looking to diversify their reading list

My only real complaint is there were a few moments where modern references make sense but sometimes it felt awkward.
Some of it was a little predictable, but for every one thing I could predict there were two that surprised me.

The emotions that the characters and I go through in this book are such a wide range of complex feelings and I was entranced. This book addresses racism, classism, grief, and anger in ways no nonfiction book ever could, while still creating a compelling and engaging fantasy world.

This might just be one of the best books I've ever read.
The world building in first books of a fantasy series are tricky but this was done so wonderfully. And I loved the way the author incorporated and addresses trauma, therapy, racism, intergenerational trauma experienced by descendants of enslaved people and their history and mythology is amazing.
