there are quite some differences in comparison to the Apple+ series (Pachinko), which I saw before and made me want to read the novel. a sad but definitely interesting read; food for thought, too.

the second half was simultaneously draining and more or less dragging on, but it also left me unsatisfied with how fast the stories were pushed through? we spent so much time with sunja and then all of a sudden the focus shifts tremendously and she is treated as a side character, which I didn’t like so much; I’d rather have the whole story focus on her, even though the others were interesting, too.

Best family-saga/ multigenerational-saga I have read. This novel drew me in the way that a grandparent telling a family story does. I wasn’t reading it to find out what the ending was, but more just because I was so interested in their lives and the domestic struggles of the time/place.

Picked it up to read as I had had it for years and never opened it. I was instantly hooked and could not put it down. I found it so interesting and it taught me a lot about Korean and Japanese history, which I was very unfamiliar with. It left me wanting more. I felt like I knew this family and I just wanted to hear about all their experiences.

Pulled me in, I couldn't stop reading. Depressing, but addictive. Noa pissed me off, I wanted to punch him, but an amazing read besides that.
