good parts:
really learned a bit more about the history of both countries and it made me feel some type of way with the whole issue of maybe hating the country that gave you a life and at the same type made it extremely hard for you.
I really liked some of the characters, the flawed actions while trying to do what you believe is right.

I liked how this was a story of a family, but since it was a story that had to cover so many years, basically an entire life and all of its ramifications, at some points it just seemed like the writer didn't know how to ease you into some things. like people died, important characters died and there was no more than five words about their death. it all caught me off guard, not because I was not expecting it, (it is a story in the middle of very violent times) but because the narration was focusing on something else and then like an afterthought they would say "because they died 6 months before" and I just had to go back and check if I missed something. I didn't.

hated:
all of the descriptions of a woman's body. every single one of them, I could not believe this was written by a woman actually.

A deeply moving generational story about race, class, and sex. The characters are well fleshed out, and even with all the tragedies that befell the family nothing seems manufactured or unnecessary. As I write this review I'm already thinking of all the people I'm gonna recommend this to.

Min Jin Lee constructed this story so purposely and its themes of luck and loss in life, inherited or not, were so strong. Certain lines or sections were so beautifully written I had to pause. There were moments that to me felt distant from the main vein of the story (or its heartbeat), and although they all contributed to the tone of this book, the wavering focus made for a sometimes odd reading experience. The ending was open, which I am notorious for being perfectly okay with, but in this case, with an epic sweep of time and characters, it fell a bit flat.
