I was lucky to find the author on Instagram and receive an ARC of this book. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book and how surprised I was by it after some other ARCs I’ve read. I’m not typically one to stay up until late reading and here I am on my second night in a row. The character development is amazing and I cared for the good ones and hated (because I was meant to) the bad ones. I felt like I was on the journey with Bones. Even though this book has emotionally wrecked me unlike any other book I’ve read in a while, and maybe because of that, I think this is the best book I read in 2023. Thank you for sharing, Kelsey

*ARC Reader* Bones is an incredible book from debut author K. L. Speer. This book left me an emotional mess at the end because of how well Speer explored the characters and made me fall in love with them. She does an excellent job of portraying someone recovering from deep traumas and the process of relearning how to trust others. I truly cannot wait for book 2!

I was so happy and fortunate to stumble upon Kelsey’s Instagram where I felt in love with the art of her characters and the plot of her indie novel. Many months later, I still had Bones on my mind, and once I saw her post about signing up for an ARC — I was pumped. Thank you so much to the author for providing me with a copy of, possibly, the most anticipated read for me this year.

Bones is a post-apocalyptic novel set in the remote mountains of what once was Montana, in the Before. She possesses incredible healing powers—ones that can stitch a near-fatal bullet wound in seconds while easily spitting out the bullet. In a world where ruthlessness and lawlessness prevail, it makes her an asset, a prize, and a weapon.

As a result, Bones is thrown from a young age into the grips of a ruthless gang, used as the gang leader’s personal secret weapon. But once this weapon escapes, she must do all she can to protect herself. Once she lands in the Vault, a completely different settlement than the one she’s used to, she must work on protecting herself above all else, and most importantly, protecting others from herself.

This was not a light read by any means. This novel deals with trauma, PTSD, sexual assault, and loneliness. Bones’s pain is raw and gripping, and it’s impossible not to share her emotions. I found myself extremely emotional throughout the read, especially…*ahem*…during and after that ONE chapter…but I digress.

The characters are so richly described and SO wonderful, it’s hard to pick a favorite. This has to be one of my favorite renditions of the found-family trope, and it only made the plot more and more enticing. Bones’s constant fear of losing those she loves is written so well and that you share her fear, and to be honest, you will be slightly stressed for all the characters involved; the stakes are high.

I truly can’t wait until the sequel comes out and to continue Bones’s story, and um, that CLIFFHANGER. I also really need a magical resolution for that one thing ASAP because I am not as emotionally strong as Bones is. Lol.

Anyway. FIVE STARS. I loved it. Thank you Kelsey Speer!!
