“all men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. the only crime is pride.”
i feel the need to point out that i was FORCED into reading this book for a school assignment. i had NO motivation to read it, which made the reading experience quite awful. simply, keep this in mind while considering the low rating i gave this book.
to sum it up, antigone, the daughter of oedipus, loses both of her brothers in the thebes' civil war. the ruler of thebes, creon, decides to bury only one of her brothers, leaving the other to be publicly shamed and rot. this angers antigone, who takes it upon herself to bury and honor her brother, no matter the legal consequences.
while tragedies are often my genre of choice, GREEK tragedies, on the other hand, are not my cup of tea… i wouldn't have picked it up if it weren't for school. there's just something about it that i can't understand, and i have no interest in the topic whatsoever.
there were a few parts, phrases, and quotes that i enjoyed, as you'll see in the “highlights” section of this review. however, it's not a lot, as you'll see. i'll have to reread this book again soon for another class. hopefully, with a little more maturity, i'll have a different perspective on antigone and her story.

Quite a simplistic story compared to what I would consider good theatre these days. Very much revenge of the gods themed. Interesting choice of words in some parts, it feels almost modern!

I don’t remember when I learned there was a sequel to Oedipus Rex, that was actually chronologically written before said play, but I think I always wanted to know what it was about. And now I do. The fact that it was named after Antigone intrigued me the most, I think. It could’ve been called Creon or Tiresias’s Last Diss or honestly a more appropriate title for this epilogue would be ‘why the hell won’t the gods leave this family alone?’ I liked how Creon’s conflict was the total opposite of Oedipus’s. Oedipus literally could not do anything to change his fate whereas Creon had repeated chances to do so and the tragedies that ensue are ultimately his own fault.
I liked it very much. It has an Aesop that’s as haunting as it’s successor and even more relevant.

If I recall correctly, I don't think I was fond of it.
