The worst Twilight book! So boring and hard to get through.

When I was a kid I was 100% Team Edward, but now I rereading the book as a married adult woman don't know what I was thinking. Even with Bella's ridiculous (although accurate for a teenager... don't worry, I'm in counseling) martyr complex, Jacob is able to bring out her fun and silly daredevil side, and I am LIVING for it. This is what a good high school romance looks like.

Best moments in the book:
-Bella's last hug with Jacob when they almost kiss before stupid stinky Alice shows up... this is the height of teenage romance and I will fight anyone who tells me otherwise.
-Jacob teaching Bella to ride a motorcycle (minus fatherly Edward showing up as a hallucination and party-pooping all over the fun).

Cringiest moments in the book:
-All of Bella's Edward delusions in which she can hear and see him commanding her to stop doing dangerous things, like literately jump off of a cliff to her ~almost~ death (or cool things, like ride a motorcycle). These are so creepy and fatherly I can't handle the cringe.
-Bella's epiphany at the end of the book that her Edward delusions were happening because "Edward loved me." Bella sweetie, maybe you were having these weird delusions, because Edward acts more like a father/abusive grandfather than a boyfriend of a high school student. Am I being judgmental? Maybe I just don't understand delusions... Anyone who has delusions of loved ones, please comment.
-Bella shushing everyone who wishes her a happy birthday. Lady, that's just rude.

So, this felt considerably less misogynistic than Twilight--but that is due to the fact that Edward ditches Bella early on in the book and doesn't reappear again until the end.

Lo and behold, not long after he does, Edward physically restrains Bella from reaching out towards Jacob in one scene and Bella just friggin' goes along with it again, like that is acceptable behavior from a partner. I'm sorry, you aren't allowed to choose your own friends? Come again? Why did we miss this dude again...?

I was fifteen when I first read this book and I remember even then I was staunchly Team Jacob. Wolfie is far from perfect and acts very immature at times but that all felt realistic to me. I can't imagine I would have behaved any better if I turned into a werewolf one day and verbally couldn't tell a soul. And was also in love with someone who loved me second best.

But I digress. Jacob isn't perfect, but he does not come across as misogynistic like his vampire counterpart and I am proud of fifteen-year-old me for rooting for him all those years ago.

If any random human on the internet has taken note of my 1 star Twilight review and now this and is wondering why I plan on finishing the series, it is merely because I am a silly completionist. I kinda hate me too.

MILD SPOILER**

Without the Cullens the story just seems so bland. The werewolves in this book just don’t interest me like the vampires do.

I went back and forth with a 3/4⭐️ for this book . . But what can I say, I'm a Twilight fan!

All the problems re. appropriating Quileute stories inherent to the series, of course, but at least in this novel the Quileute characters all seem well rounded. There may well be things I’m missing as a Scottish reader, but I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. The portrayal of Bella’s depression felt extremely real, and the tragedy of the vampires’ powers giving them information that wasn’t quite right (but also not quite wrong) was compelling. Sadly, I know some of what I loved about this book (Bella and her affinity towards the supernatural, even as a human, and her relationship to the werewolves) isn’t meaningfully resolved in the series, but if I’m looking at New Moon in isolation then there isn’t much negative to say.
