I love retellings of fairytales, so having a publisher put out a line of fairytale retellings written by different authors was great. I was reluctant to read this one at first. World War I? Britain? Didn't sound like a background for a fairytale. also, how would the author pull off the "guy got turned into a frog" part?
The answers to those questions are why I gave this book 4 stars. He doesn't literally turn into a frog, but he is a very good swimmer. As a soldier, he got burned so much, his skin resembled a frog's. Brilliant, no? Everything from the golden ball, to the "princess", to their friendship, is built well.
Spoilers from here on---------------------
Unlike the previous books, the book doesn't try to force the main characters down our throats. Instead, the book is about how they both came to trust each other. The two main characters don't just sudden run off and live blissful lives safe from the war after escaping the manor. They take part in the fighting, and are reunited after the war, which is different from how the usual fairytale goes. Definitely a worthwhile read!

This book was good but could’ve been better. I found it very interesting that the story took place in WWI but I wish there was more history incorporated with that fact. I also felt like the main characters could’ve had more interaction to actually build a strong relationship with each other so that the ending would make a bit more sense. Also this might sound silly, but seriously there were too many frog analogies! There was one analogy that was done tastefully but the rest just felt like the author was trying too hard to remind us this is a retelling of the frog prince which she could’ve done in multiple different ways. Aside from that, the story itself was decent just wish there was more to it.
Unique retelling, in an interesting location and time. I really liked it.

I remember liking this more when I first read it back in middle school. But if you're looking for a retelling that is quick and set during WWII this is for you.
A sweet short enemies-to-lovers retelling. It was actually way lighter than I thought it would be for taking place during WWII. Some parts definitely didn't seem realistic, but it was very enjoyable.

this book was unexpectedly dark. the way that magic and war was blended into the story was nice. although, i wasn't really super attached to jack and emma but, overall, it was a nice read

This was such an unexpected twist to the classic fairy tale. I stayed up reading it.
