Wow, this was really eye-opening. I knew things over there were bad, but I had no idea they were this terrible. This is an incredibly well-written, heart-breaking memoir.

Wow this was such a sad and horrific tale of a Japanese family who are convinced to go to North Korea for a better life only to discover how much worse life is in NK than Japan. The ending gave me such a feeling of hopelessness and despair. This book was somewhat different than other North Korean expatriate books I've read because the author came from a different country and knew what freedom looked like rather than having spent his whole life being brainwashed by NK. But unfortunately in this case that only made his experiences worse knowing what could have been. A tough read but one worth spending time with.

Poorly written and disappointing.

This book was phenomenal! A wonderful, heart-breaking story that will keep you reading until the end.

Incredible story poorly written.

I have read several memoirs of those who have escaped North Korea. This one is well written and brings a whole different perspective than most due to his Japanese side of the family. However, the story was short and I didn't feel like I got as much of the rich background that I did with other memoirs.
