Will make you think
This book is a heartbreaking tale of suffering, loss, and hopelessness. It is about the life of a young man, and how he came to live in and escape from, North Korea. He writes about his first impressions, his experiences, and how he made his escape. Masaji’s story made my heart ache because his writing is so clear and vivid. It was a difficult story to read because it is all true, and still happening today. This is an excellent read, and I would highly recommend it to everyone, as it tells an amazing story of survival, heartbreak, and loss. I hope it gains international acclaim, and the plight of the North Korean people becomes more widely known and understood. I believe based on this account that what is going on in North Korea is every bit as terrible as those events surrounding the Holocaust. This book will change you.

I don't honestly know how else to describe this story other than being so sad and soul crushing to know this happened, and is still happening today. This man's story humbled me into being grateful for being lucky to have the life i have. I don't know what else to say, it's just really eye-opening on how humans can treat others, even in this day and age.

Masaji's story makes North Korea sound like Scientology turned up to 11, and cloaked in sadness. Unless you have a status of favor with the government officials, how you survive these conditions!? Masaji's story is utterly heartbreaking, dotted with a strong bond of family. During some of the darkest chapters, his commitment to his family was very beautiful and made everything he endured seem almost bearable. But even when you think he's turned things around, his story is still crushingly sad. Silver lining, this story makes me feel very grateful for my life.
