Gritty. His writing is fantastic and the narrator of the audio book is unbelievably perfect.
This is not for the faint of heart. If you need smelling salts when faced with bad language or violence, find another story. But if you like excellent dialogue and interesting, flawed characters, you cannot go wrong with this author. He is one of my new favorite.

Blacktop Wasteland is a gritty, high-octane Southern noir that balances explosive action with emotional depth. Beauregard “Bug” Montage—a former getaway driver trying to stay straight—gets pulled back in for one last heist that tests his morals, identity, and legacy. Cosby’s sharp prose and compelling protagonist make this more than a typical crime thriller, though some underdeveloped side characters and familiar tropes slightly dull its edge. A gripping, fast-paced ride with real heart.

Super fun beach read, a high stakes crime caper with believable characters. S.A. Cosby is not reinventing the wheel here (no pun intended), but he gives his thrillers just the added layer of depth for him to stand out. 3.5/5
fast-paced

I found this story so compelling because I didn’t like or even root for our main character but I wanted to finish and understand his story. It’s interesting to read about an adult man who struggles with things like abandonment issues, identity issues, and even self esteem. I enjoyed his character arc because he gains a strong sense of self awareness at the end… but at what cost. I hated his choices and kept screaming “you need therapy”.

The plot was really interesting and had me shook a bunch of times. It kinda felt like a Black fast and furious. This authors books always feel like a movie in my mind while reading. I did wish the author explored the MMC’s eidetic memory more. I think it would have really elevated his complex character.
