A new series I will definitely want to read more from. Dr. Ruth Galloway is a forensic archaeologist who lives with her two cats near an isolated salt marsh. Ten years ago, she was involved in a dig of the area that revealed Iron Age settlements. Now she has been called in to identify a body. Detective Harry Nelson is still pursuing the disappearance of a little girl ten years ago. He is disappointed to learn that this body is Iron Age. But then another little girl disappears and letters start arriving with archaeological references that only Dr. Galloway can decipher. Fun page turner.

There’s a really weird amount of body shaming of the main character? Not ideal?
great characters and great plot twists. I "got" the bad guy about 3/4 in, but still liked the developing story.
this would make a great dramatic movie!
I did not give it 5 starts because of some cliches: the boss who has to get results yesterday, the over involved, sleep deprived detective and help. the "go it alone"
over all great page turner and I can't wait to read book 2!

My first Elly Griffiths book was ‘The Stranger Diaries’ which I loved, so I decided to start reading her Ruth Galloway series. The book is set on the marshes in Norfolk and Ms Griffiths descriptions really help you to see how bleak and desolate the area can be. Ruth Galloway is not your usual heroine. She is short, a bit overweight, a cat lover, prefers her own company, but I liked her very much.
I was soon drawn into the story of two missing girls and I loved the archaeological element of the book, but it wasn’t quite as fast paced as I would have liked, which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5.
I listened to the Audible version and the narrator was brilliant.

A murder mystery that blends archaeology, academia, ancient religious practice, and a bunch of standard murder mystery tropes (child kidnapping/murder, gruff police officer and his knowledgeable adviser, several suspects). The culprit was pretty obvious to me from the beginning and the ultimate reveal was ultimately anticlimactic, but the rest if the story, especially the geographical and archeological detail mixed with the characters and their relationships, was nonetheless compelling.
Minor: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Child death, Kidnapping
Dr. Ruth Galloway is an interesting character. I liked that she is an archaeologist!! I liked the setting on the desolate salt marsh too! Very entertaining!!!

I liked this book, quick and easy read. I will definitely be reading others in the series.
