Enjoyed the Penguin & Bane storylines. Particularly liked Alfred getting more attention and exploration in this volume.

I can't be the only person who feels insane reading this run, right? I keep thinking I've skipped a page, or missed a box, or something. It's so disjointed and confusing I literally have no idea what is happening. At least the Alfred story at the end was sweet.

....but seriously....what is going on?

Batman vol 9: The Tyrant wing is both too short and too long at the same time (when talking about the main story). The decompressed storytelling is great at times but then can be tiresome at others.

I read all of these as single issues as they came out and together they read better then every two to three weeks. I like the direction King is taking the character and when he's done after his maxi series I think it'll be one hell of a read. But right now watching Batman getting broken down to the point where he's alone against an army of foes is well done, and it starts to reveal itself here as a part of a larger scheme. Though at the current point issue 74 comes out in a week and we're still having Bruce get broken.

My point is: it feels stretched, spread thin. And while I enjoy what it's going for and how it's getting there the time it has taken has been too long in real time and seemingly too short in storytime.

But this volume is a bit of a mess with what it contains. Three main issues, an annual, and a collection of short stories.

The main story is fun and interesting if contrived at times. Penguin's lady love is killed so he goes to Batman about Bane who has taken over Arkham. But apparently not? He stays in his cell all day and cries, he's broken. Batman pushes too far and his allies start to turn on him because no on will believe him. Good but not enough of it included especially with how they leave it.

The art by Mikel Janin and Jorge Fornes are both good. I like Mikel Janin's style and if you do he's in top form. Jorge Fornes takes inspiration from Paul Pope and David Mizzucchelli leaving you wanting him more regularly.

The Batman annual written by Tom Taylor, drawn by Otto Schmidt is my favorite part because it explores Bruce and Alfred's relationship from Alfred's POV. All around good, fun, funny, sweet, gritty. Not super often you get Batman stories that are this sentimental and I love it.

The Batman: Secret Files collection is fun enough with a few stories one by King and Janin, another by Taylor and Brad Walker, third by Cheryl Lynn Eaton and Elena Casagrande, fourth by Jordie Bellaire and Jill Thompson, second by Ram V and Jorge Fornes. The voice and tone of characters changes drastically per story and they are all at the least interesting enough to hold attention. Personal favorite is Taylor and Walkers featuring Detective Chimp.

Overall I think it's worth continuing if you're reading through the volumes but at a discounted rate if you're buying it. And if you aren't then this isn't a good starting point.

So far it may be my least favorite volume of King's run but it's interesting enough and you get a pretty good annual out of it.

Bastante relleno, pero promete.
Mejor parte el especial de Alfred.

Man, I am fairly disappointed in this volume. I guess I should be reading this in issues because of how long it takes the takes the trades to come out, but seriously, that long of a wait for 3 issues of the main series and two one offs? Meh.

Awesome start for this new mini-series. It looks promising! Action, strong storyline and great illustrations really do the job!

The issues written by Tom King are good, but they only make up about half this collection. Other stuff is good too, just not what I bought the book for.

Wow, Penguin had a wife?! Bane is attacking Batman from Arkham?! An appearance from Detective Chimp?! This Tom King run is just simply amazing. Also, the Batman Annual #3 in this volume is so sweet and was a beautiful ending to this volume.
