I don’t usually read dark romance, but since it was a Lyonne book, I had to give it a shot—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It was dark, but not as intense as I expected, and I actually really enjoyed it. The plot was engaging and easy to follow, constantly pulling me in to keep reading.
Cedar is an incredible FMC. Despite everything she’s been through, she’s managed to stay strong and keep herself afloat no matter what. Even though she’s been held captive most of her life, this situation led her to meet an orc—who is definitely not the prince charming type. At first, he’s a monster toward her, but through the undeniable chemistry they share, something more begins to build.
Cedar was able to peel back all of Kargorr’s layers and reach his heart in her own fierce way. Her strength and fire completely won him over.
The story really pulled me in—there were plenty of scenes and twists to keep things interesting. And yes, this book is packed with spice from start to finish, but it’s placed in all the right moments without overshadowing the plot.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! If you’re in the mood for something a little dark, I definitely recommend giving it a try—Lyonne always makes you fall for the MMC, no matter how monstrous he may seem.

This one is a bit dark! I have read other monster romances from this author, and this one definitely has a darker tinge to it. Not too dark though! Certainly not darker than the average orc-and-human-captive romance. It’s definitely not what I would call “lighthearted” at the beginning, but we get lots of loving moments with the couple as their story progresses. It grows into a sweet story as you move along. My only gripe: the contradictions at some points! Argh! The characters’ inner dialogues say one thing about their past lives, only for them to say something totally contradictory one page later. It wasn’t too bad, some of it could be explained away, and some of it did showcase the angst and turmoil the characters were feeling. Also, why didn’t Cedar just leave her earlier shitty life?? She couldn’t out run an old lady? She fucked a bunch of guys in her village, but not one put a ring on it? She didn’t get pregnant after fucking all those village men?? Sure Jan 👍 It’s just little insignificant details like that that kept me from fully immersing myself in the story at first. I understand that her remaining in the crappy village was so that her orc could find her, and her earlier “experience” was to lessen the blow of the dubious consent in the beginning, along with explaining why the FMC got so hot and heavy with the MMC so quickly. Fine, I guess, although I think I’d prefer a slow burn instead. This author had done a really good slow burn with Five Gifts for the Blacksmith’s Wife. All in all, the writing is excellent, the world building is great, the characters are interesting and the smut is piping hot. Highly recommend if you like orc romances.

Minor: Cursing, Vomit, Trafficking, Pregnancy
Please check trigger warnings if easily scandalized. Lots of breeding stuff, some public sex situations, humans as captives in an orc camp, mentions of violent attacks on human villages, etc.
