I know some people might enjoy this, so it might be me. But I didn't like that. It kinda felt like a word vomit at times and a "nice guy" mansplaning womanhood some other times. But it felt repetitive most of the time. Kinda felt like the journal entries of a horny teenage boy, but not in a good way.
If you've enjoyed this, good for you. I'm happy for you. Cuz I didn't.

Ugh my heart.
Some of these poems almost had me in tears because I saw myself in them.
So simple but beautiful.
Pure and raw.
I enjoyed this.

When people fall in love with poetry because of "milk and honey" and ask for recommendations, RH Sin is my go to.
This book has activated Raging Feminist Mode I'M SO MAD ABOUT IT. I will say that some of the poems are really nice, those being the very few that aren't about women. And there are VERY few that aren't. But for the vast majority of poems in this book that are about women, it's painfully obvious that this was written by a 21st century man. Men who claim to respect women, who say they are so in touch with their feminine side, who really understand the struggles of women. Men who think they know how women feel, how they want to feel, want to be treated, etc., and think that they have the authority to shed light on these things to others. To me, Whiskey, Words & a Shovel read like a Fedora Wearing Dudebro, Knight in Shining Armour type of guy (we all know the type) giving tips to other men on how to pick up women. Like it was a guideline that, if followed correctly, would surely get you laid. All this self-righteous bullshit about still loving a broken woman, as if doing so makes him a saint. Congratulations for being capable of loving someone who has been broken down by so many men in the past, I'm sure you're really proud of yourself. Would you like a fucking medal? A pat on the back for being a decent human being?
Women do not need men to heal their wounds.
Women do not need men to make them strong.
Women do not need men to have a voice.
Women do not need men to get back on their feet.
WOMEN DO NOT NEED MEN PERIOD.

i devoured everything in just one sitting- it’s beautiful, and relatable, and i could have been the writer. the one thing i don’t like about it is, some poems are just like the other, or it’s just the same poem with different arrangement of words. but the thoughts are there. it’s pure gold. i love it! 3.75 stars
A book heavily focused on romantic relationships, where some pieces I wouldn't describe as poetry. To me, it felt more like a journal with sparse thoughts. The perspective is interesting enough to get you through the book, but often repetitive. Below are a few sentences that I enjoyed most from Sin's work:
"how brave it is to love completely"
"my most dangerous habit is overthinking"
"surrounded by all these people and yet you still feel alone"
"there is loneliness in being with the wrong person"
