I’ve been to Singapore on a layover, but other than that, I’ve never been to the country and wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve learned so much about the food, culture, customers, landscape and geography of this part of the world from this book. This was an enjoyable read and the characters felt well crafted and I was able to keep track of all the players. I liked reading the book, but I feel like tbe movie was better executed. There were a few characters that didn’t need to be in the story and a few plot points that felt unnecessary.

Entertaining overall - very soap opera-like, and it was fun to vicariously experience the  characters' extravagant lifestyles and vivid personalities. It delved into family politics, class disparities, culture clashes, and more, with a packed and fast-paced plot that really captures the hectic nature of the wedding week itself.

I don't know if I was quite the right audience for this book though, because I found some characters to be rather flat, and others that I was probably supposed to like (e.g. Astrid) to be insufferable in their own way. The fact that
it took ALL of that to make her realize that hey, maybe she shouldn't let her entire family treat her husband like their personal appliance technician at every opportunity, was absolutely bonkers.

The writing style grated on me a little - a lot of telling and not showing, especially when it came to characters' emotions. Some of the clothing descriptions with profuse amounts of designer names were thrown into the middle of scenes so abruptly that it made me feel like I was reading Wattpad fanfiction about a teenage girl waking up and getting dressed in her Abercrombie t-shirt and Converse sneakers. The book also suffers from a dated sense of humor in places, particularly in dialogue (jokes about a guy being gay because he wears eyeshadow, for example).

I had this book on my reading list forever and finally tried out the audio book. Nick and Rachel's love story caught me and drug me into the story and crazy world crazy rich Asians. The setting is so well done that you can't help but be curious about what will happen next. It almost reads like a gossip column, but you're somehow behind the scenes. The characters (although there are A LOT of them) are memorable and you get invested in their problems, no matter how unrelatable they may be. I was surprised at how wrapped up in the story I got and downloaded the next in the series the same day I finished this audio book. The audio book was well done and I liked the narrator. Definitely a fun read!
