Okay, so I LOVE the movie and I was worried that reading the book would ruin it for me, but both were good. I like to think that the book and movie are two separate stories within the same world. One thing that did bother me was how different Astrid and Eleanor were in the book. To be honest, I liked how Astrid and Eleanor were stronger and more independent in the movie. However, with the book I did like the descriptions/world building and the expanded view of Nick's circle of family and acquaintances. It was a good listen and I'm definitely planning on listening to the next book in the series.

just me or that ended abruptly? but also audiobook was a phenomenal choice for that

I needed a break from some of the more serious things I've been reading, more of an indulgent romp to palette cleanse. This was a good choice for me, I thoroughly enjoyed Kwan's dramatic portrayal of the mega rich in an area of the world that feels very new to me. All the references to fashion was also fun, he seems to really know what he's talking about.

rlly enjoyable and actually super relatable despite the fact that I'm just asian (without the crazy rich part)

Great story! I enjoyed the movie but the book filled in with so many more details and plot. Interesting complex characters all around. Book had a different ending from movie but much more enjoyable. I found the family tree very helpful and interesting. I would say the physical book is the best way to read this for the interesting footnotes (language, context, history, culture, etc) & the family tree. Had good humor and offered so much info about Chinese culture & Singaporean culture. Great pacing. I loved the different POV's from all different characters. The main character in this novel was honestly just Singaporean culture in general seen from different angles with an interesting plot to enhance it. Would definitely recommend this!

the movie has always been a favourite but the book was really good, if not, better!! the cultures are all so rich and the use of different languages and dialects adds to the atmosphere. there were changes in the plot of the movie, but i enjoyed the scenes in the book a lot more than the movie!! the mah-jongg scene in the movie is so unmatched and powerful but i love how the book ended!!

At first I was intrigued by this book, but the more I read the more exasperated I got. It was too long with too many descriptions I had no reference for. I think a lot of the humor went over my head, and I know the fancy references did. I'm sure some of them were satire, but I just don't know enough about anything in this world to get it properly.

I also didn't think Rachel's character was very strong, and she seemed to have a 180 at the end of the book.

The story drop literally less than ten pages from the end seemed super rushed.
And her reasoning for breaking it off with Nick is a good reason, and her family history wouldn't really change that. But I know from the sequel blurbs they do at least have a wedding.

I don't know, I didn't like the plot. I liked learning about other parts of the world and Rachel's mom's culture vs the culture of Nick's family and the other super rich families.

But it was too much for too long, my eyes glazed over. I'm sure this would make a great movie because all the long winded descriptions would be condensed down to a frame.
