I think I'd really give this a 3.5. I liked the story, the characters, and the drama, but there were several times where I just thought the author put in way too much description/fluff and I was just like PLEEEAAASE get on with it!

What a hoot -- thoroughly enjoyable! I am a bookseller at an independent bookstore and this will definitely be my "Summer Beach Read" recommendation to customers.
Rachel Chu, an Chinese born American economist, agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend and to meet his family. Unbeknownst to her, his family and their circle of relatives and close friends, belong to the super wealthy elite. The adventures and misadventures begin in this funny and often painful look at a culture of tradition and wealth not known to most mere mortals.
Part of 1 of a trilogy that follow these characters. I cannot wait to read the next 2!

I like the story once I got into it, but it definitely is a different vibe than the movie. There is a ton of exposition and explanations so be prepared to really use your mind while reading.
Read the book because they made a movie out of it and some of my friends loved the movie. I almost didn’t finish the book because of how poorly written I found it, but I finished it and gave the movie a shot anyways just because my friends loved it so much. Well, I’ll tell you, the movie was much better than the book. It fixed most everything I had an issue with and I had quite a few issues. I mean, the girlfriend doesn’t even get a little frustrated with her boyfriend for hiding all this stuff about his family from her? Yeah right… I’d be mad as all get out. The movie at least had them discuss the issue. And I had so many problems with Astrid’s story that the movie also fixed. Just saying.
