I like the story once I got into it, but it definitely is a different vibe than the movie. There is a ton of exposition and explanations so be prepared to really use your mind while reading.

Read the book because they made a movie out of it and some of my friends loved the movie. I almost didn’t finish the book because of how poorly written I found it, but I finished it and gave the movie a shot anyways just because my friends loved it so much. Well, I’ll tell you, the movie was much better than the book. It fixed most everything I had an issue with and I had quite a few issues. I mean, the girlfriend doesn’t even get a little frustrated with her boyfriend for hiding all this stuff about his family from her? Yeah right… I’d be mad as all get out. The movie at least had them discuss the issue. And I had so many problems with Astrid’s story that the movie also fixed. Just saying.

Really fun, even funny at times. I found the excessive descriptions of decadence exhausting at times but now I wonder if that was the point. I listened to this as an audiobook which made the descriptions really vivid but felt like i spent a lot of time just 'looking' at the world than being in it. Which, again, makes me wonder if that was the point. Like Pride and Prejudice had this effect at times, the society was so complicated it made my head fuzzy and tired

I wanted to like this book, but...nope. The author writes beautiful descriptions of the locales and the designer clothing, but the characters are not developed as richly. Do I need to know she is sitting on a velvet tufted blah, blah, blah settee or there are 10,000 crystals sewn onto this designer's gown (it took several women 9 months to sew them on!!!)? Probably not. The descriptions of rooms, clothes, and art are vivid, the characters are flat.

Just when the story started getting interesting, Rachel's Dad is alive (and in prison!?!), the story is quickly and unsatisfactorily wrapped up.
