I’ve had this one on my kindle for a while, and finally decided to pick it up. Heather was a compelling character, and I enjoyed trying to piece together what was happening with her. Beth’s chapters were griping and help build suspense. The twists and turns kept me guessing, but I did sort of figure out a few of the plot pieces before the big reveals. The setting was very well described, and I felt like I was right there with Heather and Beth. While I was definitely invested in the plot, it was a little slow paced for my liking. And some of the reveals felt a bit anticlimactic since I’d figured them out before the reveal. The ending wrapped the story up well. I liked how it showed the way things worked out for the characters after the resolution of the plot.
I did not realized the subject matter before I stared.

This isn’t a book I’d ever pick up on my own because books that flirt with true crimes are scarier to me than other kinds of thrillers and horrors, but this was a book club pick. I very nearly didn’t finish it. I ended up switching to the audiobook and plowed through.
Taking place in Pantown, MN during the summer of 1977 this is a fictional story based on the multiple serial killers that were in the St. Cloud area during that same time.
There is a lot going on in this book aside from the serial killer aspect- dysfunctional families, sleazy teenagers, corrupt law enforcement. The whole book gives off really creepy vibes and there were quite a few times I had to stop reading because of my racing heart; at one point I thought about putting it in the freezer!
If you like true crime books you’ll probably enjoy this, but if you’re someone like me who has to cover her eyes and ears when promos for 20/20 come on, you might want to skip this one.

Had to keep reading this, even though it's almost midnight and I have a headache. How many secrets and how many predators can one small town fit? A lot, apparently.
The whole setting was perfect for a horror/thriller novel, with the quarry swimming holes and the tunnels underneath the town connecting all the basements.
The endingwas still somehow hopeful, with Heather, Junie and their mom and Gloria sticking together, and Beth as well .

I liked this book a lot, and it's another book I would have liked better if I wasn't listening when i was busy getting ready or sleepy, but I started it when I was getting ready and driving to work and liked it enough I wanted to listen to it whenever I could. It says it's a thriller, but really it reminds me more of a mystery/crime who did it book. It is loosely based on crimes of seriel killers in 1977. The main character Heather has two friends disappear and she searches for the truth. I love that it showcases women's struggles with abusive men and law enforcement to keep us safe and get us justice when crimes happen against like. I think we have improved on that since the 70s, but we still have a ways to go. If you like true crime stories, thrillers, or mysteries, I recommend this book.
