It’s time for a whole new world from L.J. Andrews! Stonegate combines the Viking/Norse mythology elements she does so well, along with a brand new magic system. Magic in this world is based upon three mediums of the gods’ power - blood, bone, and soul - but there is an even rarer power that combines all three: melding. And it is melding, and a particular melder, that is at the center of this story.

The FMC, Lyra, is a melder being sought by a king who wants to control her and her power. Luckily for her, the Sentry (Roark Ashwood) sent to capture her is all broody and mysterious and hot which makes her situation just a little more bearable. In my opinion, the enemies don’t enemy…at all. They’re more bodyguard romance or annoyance-to-love, but neither is in mortal danger from the other so I didn’t feel the enemy aspect.

I also loved the entirety of the found family around Lyra and Roark. They’re all funny and supportive and help Lyra come out of her shell.

The melding itself and Skul Drek were delightfully creepy, and I definitely thought “if creepy phantom, why hot?” on more than one occasion. All in all this was such a fun read and I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series!

I loved this book. It reminded slightly of a curse of shadow and thorns, but was uniquely its own. I liked the new magic system, it was nice change from the recent books i’ve read. It has some twist I expected and some i didn’t see coming. The FMC wasn’t too whinny and I love Roark.

When I first started this book, I was extremely hooked. It felt fresh and new and I was so excited to see where it would go. I liked the magic system that was introduced, the main and side characters were so lovable (Prince Thane has my freaking heart), and I could just tell there were some epic twists and turns coming.

Throughout the course of the book, I unfortunately felt a bit less hooked. I was confused more often than not (I'm all for some complicated world-building, but eventually there needs to be some things that start making sense), there was a bit lacking in terms of plot and anything actually happening which lead to the pacing being a bit off, and I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. While I enjoy a massive plot twist as much as the next person, I'm was so sad they had to leave so many of the side characters behind. The information we found out in the cliffhanger was something I saw coming and while I feel I should be itching for the next book to figure out what happens I think I feel ambivalent at best.

Overall, I do think this was a really fun romantasy and would still recommend it overall! Thank you so much to Berkley Romance for the free book - all opinions are my own!
