I'm so distraught after finishing this book! I'm a first time reader of this author, but I had heard such great things about this book so I had to get it! The reviews I heard did not let me down. This book lived up to all of my expectations, and I enjoyed every second of reading it. My only regret is reading it right after All the Bright Places. Two sad books in a row does not do well for ones emotions.

All of the typical YA themes- one gay kid, one black kid, quirky-but-cool group. Pretty enjoyable but also very predictable.

Too YA for my 7th graders (IMHO). I listened to this one while making bookmarks and read the print version, so it went quickly. I’m not sure what I think about it, but I did appreciate the author’s note about TB. (My mom’s mom had TB, and my mom grew up thinking her mom would die of it.) The romance was okay, but for me the story lacked good writing.
Nick - Nik dodani

I was sobbing by the time I'd finished this book, not only because of the heart-breaking ending but because I'd also just found out that Alan Rickman had died and I just couldn't handle it all. Coming back to the book, it was so beautiful and engaging, I loved every page of it.
I didn't HATE this book, but as the story neared its end, I liked it less and less. I seldom give a book 2 stars, and ordinarily I would let this one slide with an "average" 3 star grade, but there were enough irritants that I have to go ahead and drop it to a 2 star.
To begin with, my standards are high. I chose this book because it appeared on an "if you love Rainbow Rowell" book list. This book is nothing like a Rainbow Rowell book. The story was only minimally engaging and the characters were not very interesting. I didn't feel as though I knew anyone or cared much about what was happening to them. When characters fall in love or die, I want to feel something other than "who was that again?"
I had the constant sense that I was hovering on the outskirts of a group that had a lot of inside jokes that I was not privy to, and it made me uncomfortable. Also, the continual references to other fanbases (Harry Potter, Doctor Who, etc.) felt like they were being made for the sake of the reference, not the sake of the plot. It seemed showoffy and unnecessary.
The end of the book waxes philosophical for no reason. The dramatic moments are repetitive and the action moments happen too fast. The characters reminisce about things that were literally in the book just a few short chapters earlier. There is no chemistry what so over between the love interests. "Wanna take a girl to your room?" Wait, do you guys like each other like that? I didn't even realize.
So maybe I'm biased, but I prefer romance that actually feels like romance. And hardship that feels like hardship. Overall, I was bored. I was waiting for something to happen when it was never going to happen.

Good read, a bit predictable, and I didn't love is as much as a loved The Beginning of Everything but it was still an extremely enjoyable read.
