I half enjoyed it, and was half annoyed by it. Sometimes the characters really annoyed me but I really enjoyed the adventure/exploring parts! The thing that is bugging me most is that I had questions at the start of the book that weren't answered, and questions at the end of the book that also weren't answered which left me more annoyed then curious. I liked them meeting all together at the end when they were older though!

Wonderful! Perfect for fans of Hatchet, this is an engaging survival story, with interesting characters, and vivid descriptions of the Amazon. I could have done with a little less of Max’s snot, but that’s a very minor quibble for an imagination-fueling, thought-provoking, satisfying adventure.

Vier kinderen (Fred, Con, Lila en Max) overleven een vliegtuigongeluk doordat hun piloot een hartaanval krijgt. Ze storten neer in het Amazonegebied. Al snel beseffen ze dat ze op zoek moeten naar een veilige plek om te overleven. Na een brand op hun plek moeten ze verder de jungle in. In hun zoektocht vinden ze een kaart en deze gebruiken zij om de bewoonde wereld te vinden. Dan vinden ze opeens een plek die bewoond lijkt te zijn geweest en daar ontmoeten zij een hele bijzondere man. Ze geven hem de naam 'de ontdekkingsreiziger'. Kan deze man de vier kinderen helpen om hun weg naar huis weer te vinden?
Dit boek heeft een geweldige cover en alleen daarom zou je het boek moeten kiezen. Het verhaal geeft een prachtig inzicht in een andere wereld. Als lezer ben je continu op je hoede . Het verhaal is zo spannend geschreven dat je door wilt blijven lezen. Het samenwerken, de overlevingsdrang en alle gevaren die ze meemaken; het is allemaal zo goed beschreven. Het avontuur begin wat traag, waardoor het misschien lastig is om in het verhaal te komen. Het verhaal is daarentegen zeker spannend. Het verhaal eindigt wel wat te snel, waardoor je als lezer misschien niet het voldane gevoel krijgt als het boek uit is, maar dat mag de pret niet bedrukken.
De bladzijden zijn overzichtelijk gevuld en elk hoofdstuk begint met een prachtige illustratie. Deze geven al een klein beetje weer waar het hoofdstuk overgaat. Dat maakt het ook weer spannend om te lezen, want je gaat zelf al bedenken welk avontuur de kinderen nu weer mee gaan maken in de jungle.
Al met al een adembenemend en spannend boek.

I would give this a billion stars if I could. It's lushly imagined, beautifully written--an adventure that'll make your heart sing. This is a classic in the making. Spectacular. The best book I've read this year.

The premise of this children’s book really drew me in, it sounded familiar in an Enid blyton adventure way, and had good reviews, but from the first page it really fell flat. I didn’t like any of the characters, I thought they would change as the book developed, and their selfish spiky stupid behaviour would turn into teamwork and camaraderie, and it did a little, but they didn’t learn much from their experience, and just as I warmed to one of them they did something that made me angry with them all over again. The explorer when he appears is an awful character, rather than helping a bunch of kids lost in the jungle, he does all he can to put them in danger! I wouldn’t call this a children’s book, at times it told them what to do to put themselves in danger, and it all felt too far fetched, even for a kids book. Somehow they managed to build a shelter, a raft, learn to navigate a jungle terrain and river rafting, travel miles through the jungle, climb a cliff face and all sorts of other things in 12 days, oh and in the first few pages they drank dirty water and didn’t get sick, hmm it just didn’t feel realistic enough, too many plot holes. I wasn’t even sure who they all were or how old they were, we were launched right into the crash without an introduction. Not a book I’d give a child to read. Disappointed.

This was fine but the kid was such a brat I wanted to throw him to the alligator, half the book was just detailed descriptions of him eating his own snot and threatening to pee on people.
