This author is a great mystery writer. Twists and turns throughout the book.

I always like how Walters respects her reader, and trusts them to understand the subtleties of her writing. This is as excellent as always.

Walters is a bit gory so I have to read her in small doses. This book has a few redeeming characters and a satisfactory ending.

Finally a book that doesn't give away the ending straight away! This one kept me guessing right until the end. Sometimes I found myself confused by her writing like it was jumping a bit from one thing to another

I picked this book from a book swap shelf. It was a book about family relationships and neighbour drama in a countryside. I expected it to be a thriller but it wasn't even very mysterious.

About fifty or so pages in, I had a feeling I had read this before, but could not remember how it ended to carried on. There is a lot going on with various different story lines going on, they all come together eventually, although not entirely satisfactory for me, it was a bit of a strange conclusion. Not a bad read though and I liked the newspaper clippings, letter and reports that were put in, it was almost a shame they disappeared in the middle to return again at the end.

The best thriller I have read in a long time. I haven't read any Minetter Walters for ages so I was looking forward to thsi and it didn't disappoint. Having read some rather lame thrillers recently it was great to get one which was a real page turner and in which I actually cared about the characters. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking I'd solved it all only to find I was totally wrong in the next chapter!

The last nearly 275 pages of this book take place in about 18 hours, which is a shock to the system after the slower more hit and miss background stuff in the first 100 pages. This was a pretty intense mystery, but very dark in tone (at least, I find animal cruelty incredibly grim at best) and the plot is murky. Of course, part of the plot is that it is supposed to be murky, because there is a great deal of double-dealing and misdirection going on and no one has a clear picture except for Fox Evil (who is evil and tortures foxes). The character of James Lockyer-Fox grew on me, although he clearly ruined his children, and Nancy had some real kick-ass qualities. Young Wolfie is a compelling character and to some extent the truth of all of the other characters is best viewed through his eyes. The plot, while realistic, was very involved. And I had horrible flashbacks to my 1L year of law school when the subject of adverse possession became a key to the whole thing.
