A truly epic finale for a truly epic series.

This series is so intelligent and socially aware. It’s utterly brutal and devastating, whilst being surprisingly heartwarming in places. Exploring topics such as empire and genocide with nuance and honesty, this series doesn’t shy away from the reality of human cruelty, not does it sensationalise or glamorise suffering. This is a series that stays with you well after the final page and one I was continually impressed with.

I’m so happy I decided to return to this world to finally finish the series because I had such a great reading experience and it’s one I would happily come back to in the future (once I’ve mentally and emotionally recovered).

I’ve never written a review before, but after finishing this series, I felt that I had to. This book, along with the others, have become one of my favorite stories. The way that Sabaa Tahir is able to weave all of the characters and story together into an ending that I felt fit perfectly is such an incredible accomplishment. I loved reading this journey and I’m excited for future books from her.

4 1/2 Stars

Sometimes I need books that are fast-paced and emotional while still well-written, and this series fits that description. It tugged at my heartstrings and ended when it should. There were a few character things toward the end--particularly with Keris and the Nightbringer--that felt a bit off to me, which could just be a personal thing. Overall, I thought this was a wonderful ending.
Spoiler I love the focus on redemption, forgiveness, and remorse. I guess that's not really a spoiler, but it's pretty significant to how the battle ends, so I'm hiding it just in case.

I liked this a lot better!

Her Mom coming back wasn't my favourite, but I like that she took over Elias' role. Also Harper dying......so sad I really liked the two of them (maybe more than the main characters).

so this series was absolutely amazing and this final book really brought everything together but oh my god that was so painful. even tho having elias become the soul catcher i think it was necessary because that plotline showed how much he truly loved laia , the fact that she brought elias out and he fought ever power just to remember her. also i hate the trope when the older brother dies. and then helene, she just never got a fucking break, first her dad mom and sister and then livvy and then HARPER JEHSSKAKS i was so upset. she deserves the world. im gonna cherish this series oh my god it was amazing
