Wow wow wow
I loved Lee’s Pachinko but didn’t find out about her first novel until a year after finishing Pachinko. This novel is fantastic. So well written. You’re hooked from page one. I resonated with the complexity of the characters.

Like a Dickens or Trollope novel was set in 1990s New York among a loosely connected cast of striving Korean-Americans. The cast of characters is huge but each one is fascinating and sympathetic. I’ll be thinking about this book and its Lee’s insights on the immigrant experience, money, class and love for a long time. Oh, and it seems dauntingly long but the pages fly by!

Not quite as enthralling as pachinko yet still with amazing character development. Good read though was slow to pick up
Korean-American view of life. Engrossing, and very surprising - you don't think of someone born here as identifying themselves with immigrant culture - I wouldn't want to live the life that is portrayed. However, after investing my time for 560 really good pages, there was no satisfying end - it just kind of stopped. Worth reading anyway.
I enjoyed the main character Casey the more it went on. It felt like she went through good character development and I feel I related to the struggle with going through your twenties.
