I was disheartened when I learned that this book was read by the author--I'm sorry, but that's usually not a good thing. And, just like I thought, the reading was monotone. I would have stopped if this weren't an Alex winner. After serving on the Alex committee for 3 years, I know I disagree with some books that are put on the list, and this is one I would have fought against. I can't picture any of my teens reading it--it's more of an older-woman-public-library-book-club novel. Sure, the premise is great--how cool is it that Rose can taste the feelings of the cook in what she eats? But the slowness of the action (or lack there of) and the slow magical realism disappointed me.

I really enjoyed this but also would have liked a more fulfilling storyline re: Joseph. I still don’t understand what happened there and i know that’s the point but it was unsatisfying.
Love the premise of the book of Rose and her superpower (or curse) of being able to discern the feelings of the chef or the origin of the produce just by tasting the food. But the ending left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended) - it felt rushed and I didn’t get the emotional payoff I was hoping for. the story had such a fascinating premise in the beginning. Why did the brother turn into a chair?!

Seriously? The main character's brother turns into FURNITURE? Still love Aimee's writing, but that's costing a star.

We can never know a person, even if we can taste their feelings in the food they make.
It has taken me a long time to read this book, not because it's bad, but because it just is...in a way like living every day is.
Reading Aftertaste made me come back to this book.
It is the same and different.
Food is what binds us.
