This book devastated me. Easily the most beautifully written book I have ever read. An absolute must read!

A good book, but depressing. I don't think I would have noticed as much if I hadn't accidentally read two gay-teenager-coming-of-age novels back to back. Coming of age is difficult enough, but being gay is doing it on hard mode and it just breaks my heart a bit. The other book was a cosmic horror novel, so the heart break on this one was worse because it could actually happen. Anyway, this one was well written, the characters endearing, and I loved the added bonus of getting to experience a different culture. I recommend, just get yourself in the frame of mind to read it first.

Gripes - I didn't care for the jumping back and forth in the timeline without always a clear idea that that's what was happening. I also wish that the supernatural elements had gotten a little more limelight or been taken out. It came off like an unfinished room in an otherwise well designed house.
