These books are incredible and I will most likely recommend them to every person I know.
Disappointing finish to a story I really loved. Too many characters were added, but then the most interesting ones were barely given any page time and considering the whole plot stemmed from them, well, that explains all of the problems with pacing. This is a huge door stopper of a book and there were about 16 pages total where I was like yes, this is what I’m here for. And then the most interesting story is just a paragraph where one character tells another what happened!!
I read Passenger, the first book in this series over 2 years ago. Somehow, I never really felt inspired to pick up the sequel. The first book had underwhelmed me quite a bit, which is sad because I really like time travel. So when I was looking at my TBR I decided to give the second one a go, though I looked up a summary of the first book first to refresh my mind.
And it... underwhelmed me even more. I don't know what it is about this story but it feels so slow to me. In places I felt bored, which only increased near the end. I didn't feel a connection to the characters and honestly, the plot was confusing. It was hard to keep track of all the different families and time travel rules, especially since time travel barely seems to be the focus of the story. The only way it is used is as a big obstacle, keeping people apart when they want to be together. The different times they find themselves in are treated as barely more than set dressing. A few descriptions of the clothes worn by people around them is all you really get about the different times they travel to. If you asked me now, I couldn't name a single era they went to that left an impression on me.
I suppose this just isn't my kind of book. I like time travel because it makes it possible for many interesting different settings to appear in a single story. I know it has to have confusing rules to exist, but those rules shouldn't be the focus, in my opinion.

Rating: 2.75/5, It was ok
The time traveling to passages, having an inherent ability to time travel, guardians and all of that was very interesting. I would’ve like to see more about the shadows, the ancient one and their origins.
This novel was too long for the story it told, if she had used part to show us the Ancient one’s story it would’ve been more rounded and less repetitive. I was very tired of the story on some parts.
I loved the lore, but I didn’t care about any of the characters, that’s why I got bored in some parts. Nick was a gary stu, so annoyingly perfect, that whole instalove
This book was so good!!! So good!!! It took me forever to finish but it was totally worth it. The story is so amazing and the writing is so beautiful. This duology is super well done and super unique. Would totally recommend!
This book tore me apart and put me back together. I laughed, I cried, I have mascara stains on my face, I regret nothing.
Rather than a recap of the plot, I'll do my best to share (in a non-spoilery way) what I loved about this book.
1. Nicholas. He is just so GOOD.
2. Etta. Her anger at injustice and her enduring optimism.
3. Sophia. So complex and so intriguing and I started rooting for her?
4. CHARACTER GROWTH.
5. REVELATIONS THAT REFRAME YOUR PERSPECTIVE OF A CHARACTER.
6. A certain thief/mercenary.
7. New threads in the traveler mythos.
8. A SATISFYING YET BITTERSWEET ENDING.
This is the first book I've read in 2017 and honestly, I don't know how anything else will compare because this story has taken ahold of my imagination and my heart and I want to bask it it awhile longer.

2.5-Wavered between 2 and 3 stars. A lot of confusing exposition and keeping Etta and Nicholas apart for so long was a mistake. Their chemistry was such a big part of what made the first book so great. The end was also a bit of a problem, all the issues surrounding their being together were left unaddressed.
The really interesting secondary characters did not get enough attention. Characterization in general fell flat for me.

I've always maintained that once I start a book, I will finish it. No matter how much I'm rolling my eyes, I will finish the book so I can give it an accurate review with the whole plot in mind. I always feel shameful when I don't finish a book, but at this point I think I have to.
I've been in a reading slump because of this book. I wanted to finish it and start other books, but I was not enjoying this book. I was lukewarm to the first book, which should have been my first clue, honestly.
This book jumps perspectives a lot. You're with Etta for a few chapters, forgetting what year or place they're in because the author jumps so often (either from her to someone else or literally jump to a new year) between Nicholas that I often had to read back a few pages if I came back to this book after a short break.
I'm sure other people found this to be a completely lovely story, and while I've loved her other books, this one just didn't suck me in like they did.

I received a preview of this book thanks to NetGalley.
This book grabs you by your collar and never lets you go. It is an intense ride from the first page and it only gets better.
