This one was strange to read. I barely remembered events from Passenger, so I probably missed things. Bracken's writing is normally kind of dense and the chapters long, but I truly felt like I didn't engage with the story. There was a lot going in regards to sides and politics, and I couldn't keep up with them. However, it was still a solid read, and the ending was great.

*I read this April 2017, and reviewed it then. I read it as a hardcover. As always, this is my honest opinion. This and other reviews can be found at www.theterriblebookblogger.wordpress.com

Normally, I’d review Passenger first before reviewing this one, but honestly, I don’t remember all that much about Passenger, other than that I enjoyed it. So, I’m going straight into Wayfarer. This will have Passenger spoilers (naturally).

A rule of thumb about Alexandra Bracken books is that her chapters are long, and descriptions are full, and sometimes, it’s hard to read because there’s a lot of words. Also, normally second books kind of give you a recap of what happened in book one, but this one definitely does not do that. So if you need a refresher on Passenger, I’d suggest you actually get that refresher.

That being said, I enjoyed this book. Following the family dynamics was not extremely fun, but other than that, the ups and downs of this story were engaging. Etta and Nicholas were great and all, but my absolute favorite character was Sophia, who was snarkier and wittier than Nicholas and Etta combined. And Julian, I loved Julian.

My main frustration with this book is my lack of connection with Etta and Nicholas, I remember loving them in Passenger, even if their love was kind of insta-loving, but I didn’t see them together enough to be able to get through this book. Maybe that’s why I didn’t absolutely love this book, but simply enjoyed it.

The ending was a little rushed, I think, and kind of weird. But overall, enjoyable and entertaining.

Believe you me, if you like time travel, historical fiction, and danger with a side of kissing, Passenger and Wayfarer are the books for you. Read my full review here Link goes live 2/20/2017

4.5

For some reason this was somewhat underwhelming. I absolutely loved Passenger (5/5 stars) but I could not get invested with the story as much. Though, I think it was mostly my fault rather than the book itself. The story does get a lot more complicated though compared to Passenger and I did find myself needing to go back and check things.

However, the character development continues and people like Sophia, who barely had a personality in Passenger, gets some redeeming qualities and worthwhile relationships. We get to see what Etta and Nicholas are like when they are separated from each other. Etta continues to be fiercely independent and cunning and Nicholas is still full of pride and honour. The stakes get higher than I could have thought possible and it does get pretty intense at times. Though the historical element is less important in this installment and I did miss that view.

It took me forever to get into since I was on vacation and did not have time to read. Once I got sucked in, I could not put it down anymore.

*3.5

Amazing!!!!!!

What I think Alexandra Bracken does best (in no particular order):
-Having a hundred million plot points seemingly unconnected wrap up perfectly in the end.
-Carry on motifs.
-Develop characters.
-World-build.
-Describe the world around the characters so that it seems real.

What I think she does the worst (again in no particular order):
-The sentence structure sometimes felt ill-thought-out.
-Falling into tedious narration or allowing characters to sound like narration.

In the end though, definitely worth the four stars!! Such an enjoyable read.
