I read the first 140 pages, which is enough to know that Miss Marple is not going to be my cup of tea. I also read the first book in the series so I've given it a fair shake. I wanted to like it but just couldn't get hooked. As I only have so many reading hours each week, it's on to something I may enjoy more!

The first Christie I ever read 'A murder is announced' always held a special place in my heart and had not dared to reread it, afraid the magic would fade.
It didn't.
But it has some pretty big flaws that are painful and unpleasant and it's almost all to do with Mitzi. I'm not sure if I would recommend this one as a way in to someone else in 2025, but it was very wonderful when I was fourteen and I didn't know any better yet. It's still wonderfully engaging and a profressive angle for the 1950s. Murgatroyd and Hinchcliffe, by now hopefully reunited on distant shores. Or a farm.

I just think that Christie's books aren't for me, it's role as an elaborate puzzle means that most of the things that I look for, character, sense of place and language that thrills are marginalised for the creation of the puzzle. However it is a good and entertaining puzzle, although as far fetched as you would expect.
Scrumptious. Oh, so very scrumptious. What great fun this was to read! Had me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. Oh Agatha, you absolute gem of a writer.
I would have appreciated a little map of Miss Blacklock's house, though. The descriptions felt like mishmash in my head.
And what? I managed to solve it as well? I've been thinking about Miss Blacklock since about halfway - first as sort of a guess, and then more and more. She seemed weirdly proud that she was getting the money, and I couldn't sense any fear from her, knowing she'd had a near miss and was clearly out to be murdered. It really sealed the fate when Miss Murgatroyd said "she wasn't there" and I really even wagered (in my head) that it's Miss Blacklock or I wouldn't buy any new books. So I'll be buying new books I guess ♥️
