Interesting but nothing mindblowing. A nice systematic review of the body and its functions for someone who doesn’t know anything on the topic, with some fun historical context of various discoveries sprinkled in. My favorite (although most depressing) part was probably when the author discussed statistics for how bad healthcare in America is and compared to various other countries.

There’s a lot of interesting information here but there’s a certain smugness in his tone throughout that I didn’t personally enjoy.

This book was very informative on many different aspects of the human body. It definitely isn't inclusive of trans people and I wasn't wild about all the fat phobia. It was entertaining and informative enough, and I realize trying to encapsulate the myriad processes of the human body into an easily accessible book is a tall order.

I enjoyed most of this book.

I think the main weakness was the sheer volume of topics the book covered. Everything was discussed in an amount enough to be tantalizing but rarely enough that it was satisfying.

I would've also rated this book more highly had it not been so fatphobic.

This was an entertaining and engaging deep dive into the systems that govern our body, but the confusing, and what felt like uncharacteristically dismissive and shallow, analysis of weight and its impact on health was distracting and discouraging. It felt odd for a medical expert to cite studies and questionable statistics that challenged each other to only conclude with, "one need only look around to see that there is a lot of excess flesh." This prevents me from broadly recommending the book, which is disappointing, because many other chapters were fascinating reveals.

very trans-exclusive and fatphobic, glossed over important things, and was generally very dull. His talk about breast cancer completely excluded non-women, which isn't even related to his exclusion of trans people- males can get breast cancer too. The sex/chromosomes section only gave XX and XY as the two options, ignoring the many variations there are even within people assigned male or female at birth.
