This was fun! As a Trekkie who enjoys TOS and the reboot, the crossover of old plots from the the original series with the characters from the reboot was right up my alley.

Of the two stories, one had a nice snippet of character/friendship development I really liked, and the other was pretty good, but I thought lacking in character development (or at least character consistency?) compared to the episode it was based on.

This graphic novel embodies the characters from the film well. The Enterprise is on a rescue mission for another ship that ends up becoming very complicated. Kirk leads the mission while trusting Spock with command of the ship. I appreciated seeing how despite Spock and Kirk being very different in terms of personality, their morals align where it matters. Spock and Kirk are both willing to put themselves at risk for the safety of their crew. Kirk trusting his crew with Spock is also a sign of goodwill. At the end when he gives Uhura and Spock time alone I think it's another sign of how their friendship will become more developed in future films. The ending to this story is very heavy and emotional affecting Kirk the most. I was not expecting it to be so dark, but I think it only adds to the stakes in a good way. The events of the plot help motivate emotional maturity on Kirk's part which I'm sure will carry over into the next film. I have yet to watch the second film because I wanted to read the graphic novels leading up to it first. I am looking forward to watching it soon after reading this, though.
